    Why is reading important?

Reading is crucial for children in education for several reasons:

    1. Language Development: Reading exposes children to a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures, which helps them develop stronger language skills. The more they read, the more they encounter new words and phrases, expanding their linguistic abilities.
    2. Cognitive Development: Reading stimulates critical thinking skills such as analysis, inference, and evaluation. It encourages children to think deeply about characters, plotlines, and themes, fostering cognitive development and enhancing their ability to comprehend complex ideas.
    3. Academic Success: Proficiency in reading is linked to academic success across all subjects. Children who read well are better equipped to understand textbooks, instructions, and other educational materials, which can lead to higher grades and overall achievement in school.
    4. Imagination and Creativity: Reading fiction and imaginative literature allows children to explore new worlds, empathize with characters, and exercise their creativity. It sparks their imagination and encourages them to think creatively, which is essential for problem-solving and innovation.
    5. Empathy and Social Skills: Literature often portrays diverse characters and situations, helping children develop empathy and understanding for others. By reading about different cultures, experiences, and perspectives, children learn to appreciate diversity and develop stronger social skills.
    6. Stress Reduction and Relaxation: Reading can be a source of relaxation and stress relief for children. It offers an escape from the pressures of daily life and provides a calming activity that promotes mental well-being.
    7. Lifelong Learning: Cultivating a love for reading in childhood sets the stage for lifelong learning. Children who enjoy reading are more likely to continue reading into adulthood, enriching their lives and continuing to learn and grow throughout their lives.

Overall, reading plays a foundational role in children's education by enhancing language skills, promoting cognitive development, fostering empathy and social skills, and laying the groundwork for academic success and lifelong learning.

    Reading Club at Tintagel Tutoring

In our online reading club children gather to engage in reading activities aimed at improving vocabulary and comprehension skills. Please subscribe and follow our vocabulary blog to help your child at home developing their vocabulary.

The club utilises a Google Meets, where members can interact and access supporting materials.

Reading materials are selected, which could include short stories, novels, or non-fiction texts at the appropriate level for the children but also those that will challenge them. These selections are diverse in genre and subject matter to cater to different interests. The club meets weekly for discussions where children can share their thoughts, insights, and questions about the assigned reading. Children will be able to interact through the chat function, or by talking directly using a microphone depending on which they are more comfortable with.

In addition to discussing the reading, the club incorporates vocabulary-building exercises. This could involve highlighting and defining unfamiliar words, creating flashcards, or engaging in vocabulary games and quizzes. The club may also include comprehension challenges to assess understanding and promote deeper engagement with the text. This could include summarising passages, analysing characters and themes, or predicting outcomes. The children can access the internet to use google searches during the session for online dictionaries, reading guides, and other supplementary materials to aid comprehension and vocabulary expansion. To track individual progress, the club may encourage members to set personal reading goals, monitor vocabulary growth, and reflect on their comprehension skills over time.

Overall, the online reading club provides a structured and supportive environment for children to enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills through collaborative reading, discussion, and interactive activities.

    Vocabulary Blog

In this blog, we add Vocabulary which will be useful for children to learn the meaning of and become familiar with for their general education and 11-plus journey.  Ask your child to remember the meaning of the word and use it in a sentence. Then make a game of the word each week where both parent and child try to use the word as often as they can - who will use it the most?
